Aberdare Mountains

Book or inquire now

The Aberdare Mountain range offers an experience unlike anywhere else in Kenya. The third highest mountain range in Kenya is covered with thick salient high-altitude forests broken by moorland and plains which give it the air of the Scottish highlands. The forest is home to large herds of elephants and buffalos as well as many species of primates.

Famously Queen Elizabeth II found out that she was now Queen while staying at Treetops Hotel in the park. There are now two Tree Hotels which are set in clearings in the forest near salt licks which attract a multitude of wildlife making for fantastic armchair game viewing and photographic opportunities. Visitors can explore this fabulously scenic region on game drives and by exploring the many hiking trails through the forest to scenic waterfalls such as the famous Thompson’s Falls. The crystal clear mountain streams are home to abundant trout and fly fishing is also a popular activity.

Access: How to get to Aberdare Mountain ranges

Aberdare National Park is located about 150 kilometres (93 miles) east of Nairobi and is easily accessible from Nyeri and Naro Moru. Regular domestic charter flights connect Nairobi and the Masai Mara to Nanyuki Airport, from where it is a short drive to most sites of interest in the vicinity of Mount Kenya and the Aberdares.
