Tsavo West National Park

Book or inquire now

Many a tale has been told about the Maneaters of Tsavo, a pair of male lions which preyed upon over thirty of the workers toiling on the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway in 1898 over nine months. Today, visitors as part of their safaris in Kenya come to Tsavo in search of their descendants a species of Lion which have developed to be mane-less.

Tsavo West National Park is known for its geology as much as its wildlife. The area experienced several volcanic eruptions around 300 years ago which has dotted the region with volcanic mounds and several lava flows such as the Shetani Lava Flow. Visitors can get out at some of these volcanic sites and follow the hiking trails. Most of the wildlife is concentrated around the Mzima Springs which are fed by crystal clear volcanic waters which bubble out of the Earth.

Game viewing can be more challenging due to the landscape and thicker bush of Tsavo but this makes sightings more challenging and unexpected. The park is home to large herds of elephants and prides of Lion. The park also has a good population of the highly endangered Black Rhino in a secure rhino sanctuary. Tsavo is also known as a good destination for birdlife.
